Population Health vs. Public Health

Updated: Jan 21, 2022

So what is POPULATION HEALTH and how does it differ from Public Health?

The NHS defines Population Health as “an approach that aims to improve physical and mental health outcomes, promote wellbeing and reduce health inequalities across an entire population.” Meaning that Population Health concerns the health of SPECIFIC groups of individuals determined by their location, incomes, education, etc.

Population Health utilizes partnerships across various community sectors such as academia, health care, local governments, public health and yes, technology! (Spoil Alert: That’s where we come in! 😉 )

👉 The GOAL of Population Health is to yes, improve health, but more so to REDUCE HEALTH INEQUALITIES between populations.

Public Health, on the other hand, is concerned with the health of society as a whole. Public Health is very policy and law driven using health education and outreach to share research findings.

But health problems tend to affect certain groups of people more than others, and COVID-19 has once again shone a spotlight on this fact. Certain communities, such as African Americans, have been disproportionately devastated by this virus. POPULATION HEALTH has been developed to address this phenomenon and Artificial Intelligence will be vital in understanding why this happens!
